Yesterday, Lamine Yamal’s bicycle kick sealed a 3–0 win for Barcelona over Real Oviedo, in a much-needed win for the Blaugrana in the La Liga title race. The goal restored Hansi Flick's side to the top of the table, after last week's heartbreak that allowed rivals Real Madrid to take the spot after playing earlier in this matchweek.

Barcelona introduced Yamal to top-flight football before most players finish school. Making his first appearance at 15 years and 9 months, he became the youngest player to feature in a league match for the Culers. Then-coach Xavi Hernandez brought him on for Gavi in a 4-0 win over Real Betis and that was where it started from.

Fame, Scrutiny, and Life Outside Football

At a very young age, Yamal’s private life became popular, even outside football. This is not common for most young players. At some point, many online reports say he is one of the most racially abused footballers in Spain online.

Even his private life was not spared. Some photos that were taken during holidays started rumours about relationships and women seen with him are harassed online. In a rather sensitive case, a woman was pictured on a trip with him. Soon after, she was subjected to all kinds of threats and abuse. Yamal even had to come out to publicly deny any romantic meaning to what people insinuated from the development. Later, his breakup from Argentine singer Nicki Nicole became a hot topic.

A particularly interesting one was during his 18th birthday celebration in 2025. Reports say people with dwarfism were brought as entertainment at the party. People started asking whether Yamal helped organise the event. Either way, the story made the news.

Lamine Yamal’s family also have their part in his rise. The Barcelona star grew up in Rocafonda, Mataró. He was raised by his mother after his parents separated early in his life. He often praises her for keeping him grounded, especially on matters of discipline. His father, Mounir Nasraoui, has been seen more in public, though he sometimes attracts attention unnecessarily to himself.

A viral photo once showed his father cheering in a Real Madrid shirt, raising questions of loyalty, since Los Blancos are Barcelona’s direct rivals. Yamal would later say his own loyalty is with Barcelona.

Trophies and Records

By the time he turned 18, Yamal had already built a trophy list most senior players can only dream of. He was part of Barcelona’s La Liga title win in the 2022–23 season, making him a league winner before he turned 16, even though his role was limited at the time. Two seasons later he played a more visible role as the Catalans lifted La Liga again, added the Copa del Rey, and also won the Spanish Super Cup (2024–2025). That same season confirmed him as a regular first-team winger, trusted in league games, cup ties, and high-pressure fixtures.

Internationally, his rise followed a similar pattern. Yamal made his senior Spain debut in 2023, then went on to make 7 appearances at Euro 2024, where Spain won the tournament. He finished the competition as the top assist provider with 4 assists, earned a place in the Team of the Tournament, and was named Young Player of the Tournament, at the age of 17 years and 1 day. As a youth, he finished as top scorer at UEFA Under-17 2023 European Championship, where he scored 4 goals and made the team of the tournament.

Individual awards also came early and in their numbers. In 2024, France Football awarded him the Kopa Trophy as the best under-21 player in the world, and he retained the same award in 2025, becoming the first player to win it twice. He also won the Golden Boy award in 2024, recognising him as Europe’s best young player. In La Liga, he was named Under-23 Player of the Season in successive seasons (2023–24 and 2024–25). This is besides multiple Under-23 Player of the Month awards in those seasons. He also picked up a good number of La Liga Player of the Month awards and a Goal of the Month award during the same period.

The Ballon d’Or placed him on a level few teenagers have reached. In the 2025 ceremony, Yamal finished second in the overall voting, ending the night as runner-up in the most prestigious individual award in football. That position, achieved so early in his career, changed how his performances were judged.

As of today, matches he plays are no longer measured by promise; they are weighed against elite standards, with each appearance carrying a high level of expectation.

Yamal’s experience is just what it’s like to be a young star in today’s football. They are exposed early, always watched, and constantly judged. One mistake can go viral. Talent gets them opportunities, but the price they get to pay is privacy.
