Who Is the Most Complete Midfielder in World Football?

There is no shortage of names when the conversation turns to the best midfielder in the world. Jude Bellingham has the goals, Pedri has the passing, Federico Valverde has the engine, while Declan Rice, Alexis Mac Allister, and others bring qualities that make them difficult to overlook.

But we are going to choose one.

Getting to that name requires a proper case construction. Goals are not the only measure of a complete midfielder. Passing, defensive work, and chance creation are also important, and the true measure is how well a player can integrate all three.

How good a defender is he? What amount of control does he have in his passing, and how accurate is that passing? Is he able to make opportunities when his team is looking for another avenue to the goal? Then, when the moment arrives, is he able to score without compromising his duties in midfield?

That's where the comparison becomes interesting.

Some of Europe’s most highly rated midfielders have one obvious quality that makes their case very strong. However, when the comparison goes beyond that strength, the picture changes.

Bellingham's product is direct. He scored 19 La Liga goals in his first season, but his defensive statistics are not in line with those of a top holding midfielder. He had 0.9 interceptions per 90 minutes and ranked in the 45th percentile for progressive passes among all pure central controllers.

Pedri is a different breed. He is averaging 2.8 key passes per 90 and passing with a high degree of accuracy, typically over 91.6%. His physical impact, on the other hand, is less pronounced, with his 1.8 tackles per game and less than 48% success in aerial duels.

There is Valverde, too. He has a lot of energy to offer. Despite the over 4,000 minutes he had in a single campaign, his 1.1 key passes per 90 and 84.2% success rate in tight spaces show he is a midfielder who can be more of a catalyst when the game is open, rather than one who can control it.

Declan Rice is one of the best defensive midfielders in the game, with an average of 2.1 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per 90. However, against low blocks, his 85.4% pass completion rate when under pressure and reduced key-pass numbers have a lesser effect on his ability to control the tempo from deep.

Each player has a strong argument. The issue is really finding one that can unite those various duties in a consistent way.

That's where the case begins for Rodri.

He anchored Spain's midfield and led the tournament with 782 completed passes and 68 progressive passes at the 2026 World Cup. He also shared the most successful tackles with 19.

Also, over the last decade, Rodri has completed over 100 passes per 90 minutes with a 92.4% completion rate in domestic games. Defensively, he has 6.2 ground duels won per 90, recovers 7.1 loose balls per game, and has a tackle success rate of over 68%.

His defensive value isn't confined to the aggressive marking, though. Rodri's positioning ensures he is able to intercept attacks before they become a last-ditch tackle.

Then, there's his attack contribution.

It's not as loud as Bellingham's, but it's still noteworthy. As a deep ball midfielder, Rodri is averaging 1.4 key passes and 0.18 expected assists per 90 minutes. He also averages 7-9 goals per season, providing his team with another outside threat.

That talent has also been on display during the biggest moments.

The 68th minute of the Champions League final against Inter Milan saw Rodri come to the rescue in the 20-yard area, beating André Onana. The goal set up the win and put Manchester City up 1-0, adding to their treble.

In the 2021/2022 season, in a tense title-race meeting at the Emirates, City were level 1-1 against ten-man Arsenal. Rodri arrived in the box in the 93rd minute and turned home a loose ball to give City a 2-1 victory.

This is not the first time he has done it, as he curled a 25-yard left-footed shot into the top corner to cut through a stifling match against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final first leg in 2023.

Rodri is not a goal hunter throughout the game. His worth lies in his ability to dictate the game, and then when the moment is right, being in the right places.

That is what makes him different.

He delivers a lot of volume, accuracy, passing, positioning, ball recovery, chance creation and an actual threat from distance. Most midfielders have one or two areas where they stand out. Rodri is always involved in them all.

That is the extent of his profile that makes it so hard to match.
