Karl-Anthony Towns Finally Silences His Doubters

After years of being underrated and being called names, Karl-Anthony Towns is an NBA Champion

For most of his career, Karl-Anthony Towns has worn a moniker he never wanted to wear.

He was dubbed soft by Jimmy Butler in a controversial 2018 Minnesota practice, and the tag lingered through nine years, four All-Star appearances and a streak of playoff disappointments that included three first-round exits in six games or fewer.

Not even a trip to the 2024 Western Conference Finals could wash it away. Towns shot less than 38% from the floor in that series and was scapegoated for the defeat, paving the way for his trade to New York months later.

He eventually put that myth to rest for good in his first Finals appearance in June.

Towns averaged 19.5 points, 12.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists on a stellar 56-43-100 shooting line with double-doubles in both of the first two games.

He was just as successful on the other end – when lined up directly against Victor Wembanyama, Towns outproduced him on greater efficiency, all while helping limit Wemby to sub 37% shooting in their head-to-head minutes.

It was the most definitive response he could have produced for a player once suspected of disappearing against elite competition.

The Return of the Old Ghosts, Briefly

It wasn’t a perfect run. Towns had quiet nights in Games 3 and 5, including a forgettable 2-point, 10-rebound performance in the closeout game where he fouled out in just 23 minutes.

Predictably, several reviewers fell back on the old standby. But this time, there was a supporting cast, and a strong, comeback-minded team, where one bad shooting night wouldn't define the series — something that was not the case in Minnesota.

A Title Alters the Conversation

Towns has had some of the most well-rounded numbers of his career this playoffs, averaging good numbers in scoring, double-digit rebounds and multiple assists a game, his most complete playoff run to date.

He finished as an NBA champion, something that nine seasons in Minnesota never did.  After the decider, Towns just said it was nothing new.

He’d been knocked down before and kept getting back up. Whatever you want to call his game now, it's not "soft" anymore. The ring guarantees it.
