Ask any serious NBA fan to name the two most dominant players of the last decade, two names rise above the rest.

Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic have split MVP awards, championship rings and fan opinion right down the middle.

They are both generational talents and neither of them plays like anyone that came before them.

Paths to Greatness

Giannis came into the NBA in 2013 as the 15th overall pick out of Athens, Greece, an 18-year-old raw talent who grew up selling items on the streets to help his Nigerian immigrant family make ends meet.

Jokic was one of the biggest draft day mistakes in NBA history, coming out of Serbia as the 41st pick overall a year after Giannis

One was a physical freak who defied all categories. The other was a center who absolutely turned basketball’s conventional wisdom upside down

The Numbers

Over 13 seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks, Giannis has averaged 24.1 points, 9.9 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game and is the only player in NBA history to average at least 25 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, one block and one steal per game over multiple seasons.

And meanwhile Jokic has put up numbers so complete that they are almost just absurd. In 2024-25 and 2025-26, he became the second player in league history to average a triple-double in multiple seasons, joining Russell Westbrook.

He also became the first player in NBA history to lead the league in both rebounds and assists per game in 2025-26.

Number of MVPs

This is where Jokic has set himself apart. He has three regular season MVP awards (2021, 2022, 2024).

Giannis was the MVP in back-to-back years in 2019 and 2020, and in that 2020 season, he became just the third player in history after Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon to win both the MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season.

Championship

Each man has one NBA championship to his name. Giannis led Milwaukee to its first title in 50 years in 2021, scoring 50 points in Game 6 of the Finals while averaging 35.2 points, 13.2 rebounds and 5.0 assists in the series.

In 2023 Jokic led Denver to their first ever championship, becoming the first player in NBA history to lead an entire postseason in total points, rebounds and assists, averaging 30.2 points, 14 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game.

Conclusion

Jokic has more MVPs and maybe the most technically complete game we’ve seen from a big man in the NBA.

Giannis has the physical dominance, the defensive credentials and a championship moment for the ages.

At this point Jokic has the hardware edge. But the debate is far from over, and both men are still writing their legacies.
