Olise to Real Madrid, Vinicius to Arsenal: What the rumours mean for the Bernabeu attack

The World Cup has barely ended and the Bernabeu is already at the centre of two of the summer’s most consequential transfer stories. Michael Olise wants Real Madrid, according to Marca. Vinicius Junior’s contract runs out in 2027, talks have stalled for over a year, and David Ornstein has just reported that Arsenal have taken the first steps to explore whether a deal is possible. Both situations are live. They are also directly connected, because how one moves will determine what is possible with the other.

Florentino Perez had identified Olise as his next Galactico signing, with a fee that could exceed €223 million. Mbappe, who built a strong relationship with Olise during France’s World Cup campaign, personally told Perez that the 24-year-old wanted to come. Goal’s report confirmed that an informal understanding between both players had grown through the tournament into something more concrete.

Bayern Munich’s response has been that he is not for sale. Upamecano, Olise’s France teammate, was blunt about it. His contract runs until 2029 with no release clause, and Bayern have been in discussions about extending it further. Christian Falk, who covers Bayern more closely than almost anyone, confirmed that Olise will not force an exit this summer and that Real Madrid have accepted, for now, that a deal in this window is not realistic. The informal agreement between Perez and Bayern president Herbert Hainer, that neither club would pursue the other's players without prior communication, closes the door for the immediate future.

But this is unlikely to be the last word. Real Madrid are patient when they want someone, and Olise has revealed his preference to those around him. The story will run into next summer, and possibly the one after that.

Vinicius & Madrid attack if both move play out

Ornstein reported on July 25 that Arsenal are exploring a move for Vinicius, with interest at an early stage and no club-to-club contact yet made. The idea, he added, has been approved at all levels within Arsenal. What makes this more than routine transfer noise is that Vinicius has one year left on his deal after next summer. Talks have been ongoing for over a year without a breakthrough, and Real Madrid have no intention of letting him leave for nothing.

Real Madrid currently play Mbappe through the centre, with Rodrygo and Vinicius on either side in what will most likely be Jose Mourinho’s 4-3-3. Bellingham operates as the advanced midfielder behind them, coming into the box from deep.

That structure works when Vinicius is at his most direct, carrying from the left, beating his man, and cutting in or crossing. The problem, as using him relatively recently  (under Alonso and Arbeloa) so far suggests, is that the system may not be designed around him in the way Carlo Ancelotti’s was.

If Vinicius leaves and Olise comes in, even if that is 12 or 24 months away,Madrid’s front line changes in a way that suits Mbappe better than the current one does. Olise is not primarily a carrier. His value is in his passing range, his ability to play off the second man, and the way he creates space for the player beside him. This is something different, and it offers variety.

Mbappe and Olise produced five direct goal combinations for France at the World Cup alone, and the chemistry they built there is not something clubs can manufacture through training ground sessions. It already exists.

A Madrid front three of Mbappe, Olise, and Rodrygo,  with Bellingham behind, would be built more around combination play and intelligent positioning than the pace-and-carry dynamic Vinicius provided. It would suit Mourinho’s tendency to want structure in attack rather than relying on individual moments. Whether that is better or worse than what Madrid currently have depends on what you value, but it is a coherent vision, and it appears to be the one Perez and Mbappe are aligned on.

Vinicius may sign a new contract. Olise may stay at Bayern for another two years. Transfer windows rarely go the way we expect. But the direction of travel at the Bernabeu points toward an attack built for the next phase of Mbappe’s career, with Olise as the piece he has been pushing for. As for Arsenal, what they do in the meantime, and whether they can land Vinicius, will tell us a great deal about how seriously the Premier League champions intend to compete with the continent’s biggest clubs on the market.
