The Sixth Man: Basketball's Most Underrated Role
The best teams are not just built on great starters, they also need a sixth man who can change the game when it matters most.

In basketball, the starting five typically gets the attention. They are introduced before the game, featured on posters and receive the majority of attention. However, every successful team has another asset: the sixth man.
The sixth man is usually the first to come off the bench. While he doesn't start, his role is significant. He can often change the flow of a game in just a few minutes.
The NBA acknowledges the importance of this role by presenting the Sixth Man of the Year Award, which has been given out since the 1982-83 season.

Providing Energy When It Is Needed
The main role of the sixth man is to generate energy. When starters need to rest, the team can't afford to lose momentum. The sixth man comes into play.
Some can score quickly to add points. Others focus on defense, rebounding, or providing leadership. No matter how good they are, they are expected to make an immediate impact
Manu Ginóbili, Lou Williams and Jamal Crawford are just a few of the players who have excelled in this position. They demonstrate that a player can be effective when coming off the bench.
Sacrifice for the Team
Many of these players are capable of playing for other teams but opt to play on the bench to help their team win.
This sacrifice often goes unnoticed. A player could be remembered as a reserve, even if he scored 20 points and played the entire game. The best sixth men are about team success, not personal accolades.
